The goal of every homeowner whether they live in a Mansion, Apartment,

But with the chaos of clutter weighing you down, it can feel like you’re stuck in a neverending to-do list.  It can be hard to achieve this state of zen, when there’s piles and boxes to go through.

Oftentimes, it just comes down to misguided strategies that worked for our moms and grandmas, but don’t exactly fit in today’s easy order, here tomorrow lifestyle.  So it’s time to clear out some of the old sayings that are burned into our memories and adopt a new way of looking at our belongings.

Maybe you’ve been holding on to those doily placemats your grandmother made because, “one day you might need them” but also wondering why am I holding onto these, they aren’t even my style?

What Is Energetic Decluttering?

Energetic Decluttering aims to revolutionize your approach to organizing your possessions, helping you distinguish between items that energize you and those things that drain you, guiding you through a transformative process of letting go and creating space for joy, and empowering you to curate a home environment that truly reflects your essence, and energizes you.

I’m not talking about waving a sage stick around and chanting, I am talking about getting bags and boxes of things out of your space, that are draining your energy.

Our environment affects us. Have you ever sat in your driveway after work and dreaded going into your house, because there’s more work to be done once you go inside? Or have you ever opened the door to a hotel room, and felt a physical shift in your body, your shoulders relax, you take a deep breath, you can feel the stress leaving you, because there are no expectations of you here. What if your home could feel like that for you?

Energetic Decluttering works because it dips into three areas of your life, from your physical well-being, your emotional connections, and your mental health. Energetic Decluttering is a holistic approach to decluttering. For women overwhelmed by the chaos of clutter in their homes, this method serves as a beacon of empowerment, offering liberation from the burden of possessions and bringing in a wave of positive energy and renewed vitality.

Why Is Energetic Decluttering Important?

Studies show that women who describe their homes as cluttered are more likely to feel tired, stressed, and overwhelmed compared to those who describe their homes as tidy and organized.

Living with clutter can create a constant source of stress and overwhelm, as the visual chaos can lead to being mentally drained, and emotionally exhausted. Constantly navigating around piles of belongings or struggling to find things in a cluttered home can exacerbate feelings of frustration and anxiety, impacting overall well-being.

Clutter also serves as a constant reminder of uncompleted tasks or unresolved issues, further contributing to a sense of disarray and discontent. The psychological weight of clutter can manifest in heightened levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, which can lead to fatigue, irritability, and health issues over time.

Not knowing where to start and feeling stuck are common symptoms of the overwhelm of clutter. The problem just starts compounding.

By implementing energetic decluttering, it starts getting easier and easier to recognize what deserves to stay in your space, and what’s got to go. Some of my clients have found that by having the checklist and flowcharts their decision making time is cut way down, and they experience way less mental fatigue.

Also, energetic decluttering gives you a starting point. I like to pick the area in my client’s life that contains the energy they want to focus on, physical health and well-being, mental focus, creativity and wealth, or relationships and love.  We then focus on the physical things in the home that are blocking those energies.

That means you won’t have to spend time and energy focused on the physical things in their homes that are distracting them from their health, their creative project, or finding love.

Energetic Decluttering Examples

If energetic decluttering sounds a little out there or confusing, I get it.

I am on the woo woo side of the professional organization community, but this isn’t mystical magic – we are getting into it and physically clearing clutter, We are just adding an energetic layer, or another reason why to let things go. If you are stuck on saying goodbye to an item that you have been holding on to, energetic decluttering puts you and your energy first in line and your stuff second. It is only stuff.

So I put together the examples below to break it down for you so you can easily get started with energetic decluttering.

Example #1. Emotional Energetic Decluttering

This is letting go of things that are charged with emotional energy. Emotional energy is the energy that it takes to have a healthy relationship. These are all of your relationships; family, friends, romantic, and the most important one, the relationship with yourself.

So Emotional Energetic Decluttering is the practice of letting go of any of the things that are connected to someone else that isn’t serving the best version of you, or doesn’t reflect your current lifestyle.

Although this seems like a daunting way of looking at your things, it’s actually a very useful filter to use to unlock a newfound sense of freedom and clarity in your life.

Plus as you release these emotional tethers, you’re creating space for new and positive energy to flow through your home and into your life.

This process not only enhances your emotional well-being but also allows you to cultivate healthier, more fulfilling relationships with both yourself and others. By practicing Emotional Energetic Decluttering, you’re taking proactive steps towards creating a life that aligns with your true desires and values.

Here are the two questions  I give my clients to help them decide what to keep and what to let go.

Question 1. Was/is that relationship with that person a healthy relationship for you?

Question 2. Does this item spark joy – that’s right the Godmother of declutter is not wrong! Does this item fit in your life now, and make you unbelievably happy?

The answers need to YES to both of these questions, a soggy yeah, is a no. Surround yourself with only the best things that make you happy -you are worthy of that!

That means letting go of some hard things.

Story time, I got a package in the mail from my amazing mom, it was a simple black sheath dress, and a pair of beaded red earrings. Really, neither was my style and I had every intention of letting her know that I was going to return them and get something that made my heart sing. But then my dad called and my mom was admitted to the hospital. The next 2 weeks was a roller coaster ride, but then my sweet amazing 76 years young mother was gone. I came back home to find the dress and the earrings, these were the last things she had ever given me, and I found myself holding onto them, but just for that reason. A few months later, this package was still on my desk, and I realized it didn’t make me happy when I saw it. This wasn’t a happy memory of my mom. It made me sad, and I felt guilty that I would never wear it. So I let it go. I have many other things of my mom’s that bring me joy, like her aquamarine ring, it’s her birthstone and mine, I love wearing it and twisting my finger around it.

When emotional decluttering, the key is both answers need to be yes to take up space in your life. Was the relationship with the person a good one, and does this thing bring you happiness and serve you in your life?

Example #2. Physical Energetic Decluttering

The physical things you can clear from your home,  the more space you will have. Your home is not meant to have plastic storage bins on the floor, or piles of paper on every surface. When you need to pick up something and move it to get to a cabinet or drawer you are exerting more physical energy than you need to, now your clutter is costing you time and physical energy. If you do have boxes or piles on your floor this becomes a home health hazard, a tripping hazard. Taking care of your environment, your home affects your physical health. Besides fall hazards, pet hair, mold spores, and dust mites collect and pile up over time in clutter.

I was recently invited to talk about weight loss and clutter, and I think that what they expected me to talk about was purging your pantry of sweets and things to avoid temptation, but I took it a bit further on the energetic spectrum. The talk was focused on self-worth.

For example: You are worthy to live in a body that feels good and healthy to you. You are worthy to eat food that nourishes you. You are worthy of eating off of plates that are beautiful and have no cracks or chips, you are worthy to use utensils that feel good in your hand and in your mouth. You are worthy to have the workout clothes that fit your current body type and make you excited to put them on.

The best way to implement this is to declutter small areas at a time, start with the kitchen, start with one drawer a day, start with the silverware drawer, do you need all of it? Is it all matching? Do all the forks have the tines pointing in the right direction? Declutter and donate what doesn’t fit the healthy best version of you and your family. Do a little bit everyday.

Example #3. Mental Energetic Decluttering

I saved the most important one for last, this one is so so so important. Clutter robs us of mental clarity and focus. Our brain is a never ceasing computer, and clutter adds to the programs constantly running in the background. You may not be thinking about your guest room piled high with boxes, but your brain knows it’s there, and it’s taking more brain space. Clutter robs us of your creative genius.

Here’s the woo woo part again, stay with me. We are all connected to source energy, or the creative consciousness. When we have lots of clutter that pipeline gets clogged up. Having less stuff makes thinking, meditating and praying easier. You’ve heard the saying cleanliness is next to Godliness – I think it’s because it gives us mental clarity!

I was speaking at a women’s business meeting in San Diego recently, and I talked about one item on my Energetic Decluttering Checklist under the mental energy section, and I want to share it with you today.

Pens. Have you ever felt in the flow, and gone to write down your great idea and your pen scratches across the paper. You move to the side and start drawing circles to get the ink flowing again, but you’ve already been taken out of your zone of genius and now you are irritated. What if you were only surrounded by pens that you love. Pens that fit perfectly in your hand and glide across the paper? What if you started there, just looking around your house for pens that you can get rid of today!
